Instagram Reaches 100 Million Monthly Active Users

What exodus?

The changes in Instagram‘s terms of service do not seem to affect the app’s popularity as its company announced that over 100 million users are actively using the app on a monthly basis. The milestone suggests that 10 million new mobile photographers have been sharing their filtered images in the app in five weeks and there are no signs these numbers will slow down.

Instagram’s co-founder Kevin Systrom wrote on its official blog: “It’s easy to see this as an accomplishment for a company, but I think the truth is that it’s an accomplishment for our community. Now, more than ever, people are capturing the world in real-time using Instagram–sharing images from the farthest corners of the globe. What we see as a result is a world more connected and understood through photographs.”

Systrom also cited some Instagrammers who are neither into food porn or taking photos of their feet, like an aid worker documenting day-to-day life of South Sudan’s most remote refugee camp; two users who followed each other and, after trading likes and coffee meetings, started dating; and small-scale manufacturers sharing their daily work.

“Images have the ability to connect people from all backgrounds, languages, and cultures,” Systrom continued. “They connect us to aid workers halfway across the world in Sudan, to entrepreneurs in San Francisco, and even to events in our own backyards. Instagram, as a tool to inspire and connect, is only as powerful as the community it is made of.”
